THE RACING DESCRIBED.

SURPRISES ON HEAVY COURSE. (By Wire—Special to News.) Wellington, July 13. The Wellington races concluded today in wet weather and there were some great surprises and big dividends. An inquiry was held after the Winter Hurdles and A. Hobson, rider of Overhaul, was suspended for five weeks for crossing Comical aad then Mister Gamp. Horomea led from end to end of the race for the Talavera Hurdles. She ■was followed most of the way by Amorist, with Master Doon and Calluna prominent in the early stages. Nearing home Glena Bay and Thurnbell went after the leaders, but Horomea stayed on to win nicely by two lengths from Amorist, with Thurnbell a length away third and Lady Gay, Modern and Glena Bay next. Thurnbell did not jump very well and still needs a little seasoning.

Juggle, a good favourite, went under in the Novice Handicap after having a good chance. Air Laddie led Roundelay, Juggle and Last Mark on to the course proper, where Last Mark drew away to win by two lengths from Roundelay, who beat Air Laddie by half a length, with Arrowzone fourth and Juggle next. As soon as the tapes were lifted in the Crofton Handicap, Havering and Austerity shot to the front. Brilliant Light and Fine Acre moved forward a little later, and crossing the top Havering was six lengths clear. His rider had the stick out at the straight entrance and Havering, very tired, struggled home by half a length from Maori Boy. Otaura Lass was a close third. Royal Black was fourth and Brilliant Light and Fine Acre next. Mister Gamp was a hot favourite for the Winter Hurdles and, after running a great race, was narrowly defeated. Prince Lu led through the straight the first time from Comical, Aberfeldy, Locarno, Overhaul and Red Fuchsia. At the six furlongs Overhaul took charge and a little later Mister Gamp moved up. Overhaul led Mister Gamp and Comical into the straight, Overhaul winning by a length from Mister Gamp, with Comical six lengths away third. King’s Guard was fourth and Locarno and Red Fuchsia next. w Merry Mint was backed as a good thing for the Winter Oats. Otairi and Merry Mint led to the straight, from Full Feather, Last Crust and Black Mint, and in the run home Otairi came away to win easily by three lengths from Gold Cure, who got up in time to beat Full Feather by three-quarters of ft length, while Merry Mint was fourth and Town Bank and High Pitch next. The winner paid a great dividend. He was improved by the race he had on the first day and won really well. Merry Mint will be better for the race and so .will Gold Cure, SURPRISE OF THE MEETING. The July Steeplechase produced the surprise of the meeting. Boomerday and Brigadier Bill were in charge early in the piece, but after hitting hard at the sod wall Brigadier Bill dropped out and, with a mile to go, Radiate was in charge from Alaric and Royal Elm. Alaric had Radiate beaten at the straight, but Maunga came from the back and won easily by three lengths from Matu, who beat Alaric by four lengths, while Radiate and Royal Elm were next. Fabriano fell. Brigadier Bill failed to complete the course. Maunga chanced some of his fences, but over the last half-mile completely outstayed the field. It is a long time since he won a race and consequently he paid a big dividend. Taboo, Kaiti, Black Duke and Sudden Storm were evenly backed the Onslow Handicap. Kaiti led by three lengths to the straight, where Marble King came through on the rails, while the others went wide. Marble King came away to win easily by three lengths from Taboo, who just got up to beat Kaiti by a head, with Billikins and Tcheka right alongside. As usual, in the concluding event several runners were well supported. The Horses were not easy to pick up till they came on to the .course proper. Lucky Bag came through on the rails and established a clear lead from Taranto and Kotahi Eka. Mark Mint made an effort a furlong from home but had no chance of overhauling the leaders, and Hopwood came on the outer. Lucky Bag won by three lengths from Taranto, with Kotahi Eka two lengths away third and Hopwood, Mark Mint and Mangahaeri next. EGMONT RACING CLUB. OFFICERS FOR NEXT SEASON. Gray; vice-president, Mr. A. Good; honorary treasurer, Mr. S. Adamson; committee. Messrs J. H. Baker, H. I. Crocker, 11. A. Foyster, R. Hicks, G. G. Laroom, VV. McL’Dowie, C. J. Preston, M. F. Preston as a steward. The committee’s report for the year Is as follows: —

“The profit and loss account shows a net credit balance of only £39 16s 9d. and an examination of the statement of accounts shows this financial position to be due to a general decrease in revenue received from the public at race meetings. It will be seen, however, that wo have been able to write down the buildings account by £250, and under the general racing conditions obtaining last year, it was not anticipated that the club would be able to show a large profit. The maintenance account was again a heavy item, and expenditure on repairs and renovations to racecourse buildings amounted to £470 Is 6d, while the upkeep of course and tracks absorbed £lB2 7s 3d.

“We sincerely regret having to record the deaths during the year of three members, Messrs J. Heslop (life member), and W. R. Douglas and H. C. Crocker, to the relatives of whom exsions of sympathy, were tendered. “In concluding this report, the committee desires to express its thanks to the honorary and permanent staffs for -•"’•vices rendered during the year.”
