INTER-SCHOOL RUGBY,

SECOND FIFTEENS’ CONTEST. NEW PLYMOUTH BEATS WANGANUI A closely contested game played between the second fifteens of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School and Wanganui College at Wanganui on Wednesday, ended in a victory for New Fly* mouth by 8 to 3. During the first half the heavier Wanganui forwards had slightly the better of the game, but though their backs received the ball frequently they failed to score. The Wanganui rearguard handled well but weie unable to penetrate owing to the deadly tackling of the New Plymouth backs. At half-time neither side had gained any points. On resuming, play oscillated in midfield until Snell, the New Plymouth centre, snapped up the ball from the loose and scored after a short run in which he shook off two opponents. He converted his owm try with a good kick from W’ell out. Finding New Plymouth in the lead the Wanganui forwards retaliated with a rush- As soon as they

were checked the ball travelled along the back line to tlio wing, Mcßeth, who ran strongly down the line, fending off man after man until he scored. The try was not converted. Shortly afterwards several fruitless attempts were made by Wanganui to raise their score by free kicks. The New Plymouth forwards were combining better, and after a hard struggle carried the ball to within ten yards of the line, when, from a scrum, Death forced his way over and scored a good try which, however, was not converted. The game ended with the score: New Plymouth 8, Wanganui 3.
