Wellington, Last Night. • The Wellington winter races were continued to-day in fine .weather. The |

track again was heavy. The attendance was good. Fine Acre touched a very short price in the Corunna Hurdles, but the first day’s fall had affected him and he ran a poor race.- Waltzer went to the front at the start and led over the last hurdle, but was tiring and Horomea beat him home by a length. Inferno was five lengths away third and Fine Acre was fourth.

Zarene, Hopwood and Shortly were the Trial Plate favourites. Zarene and Hopwood led on to the course proper, where Hopwood drew away to win by three lengths, while Zarene faded and in the end Shortly got up to beat Great Lady by a head for second. Loving Cup and Zarene were next. Hopwood won really well and Shortly came from a long way back. Zarene stopped badly. Glyn Dhu, Justify, Brilliant Light and Glare were prominent in the early stages of the Seat-oun Handicap. Maori Boy took charge at the turn into the straight, but challenges came from several quarters. Balloon came through on the rails and Brilliant Light on the outside, and in a great finish the three passed the post together. Brilliant Light got the decision by a head from Balloon, who beat Maori Boy by a nose. Otauru Lass and Glyn Dhu were next. It was the best finish of the meeting up to date. Maori Boy was a bit unlucky to lose as his rider went to the front rather soon.

For more than a mile Askari, the outsider, led the field in the Second Hack Steeplechase, but Boomerday and Alaric then moved forward and Askari was soon done with. Alaric was first into the straight ahead of Boomerday. Alaric finished far too well for anything else and won by six lengths from Royal Elm, who finished fairly well and beat Boomerday by two lengths for second. Askari was fourth, just ahead of Waitaunaha. Koauau, San Fera and Bonayron fell and Aurora Borealis was Interfered with by the fallen horses and was pulled up.

HIGH PITCH WINS PARLIAMENTARY

Bisox went out a good favourite for the Parliamentary Handicap, but she was never dangerous. Ruanui got to the front at the mile post and led along the back from Town Bank, Thurnbell, Anolo and Singleton. Fairy Herald ran up smart-y six furlongs from home, and crossing the top Ruanui, Fairy Herald and Town Bank were the leaders. Ruanui was first into the straight with Fairy Herald, Town Bank, Singleton and Anolo next. Positions changed somewhat in the’ run home, but finally High Pitch got through and won by a length from Singleton, who had his neck in front of Fairy Herald. Ruanui, 'jjiurnbell and Bisox were next. Fairy Herald might be suited by a shorter journey shortly. Prince Lu went out very fast in the Highweight Handicap, and led along the back from Aberfeldy, Curtsey, King’s Jest and Modern. Nearing the straight the order was much the same, with Courageous in the rear. King’s Jest took charge half-way down the straight and won very easily by three lengths from Aberfeldy. Curtsey was a length away third and Beaumont and Courageous were next. King’s Jest lost nothing by having the services of A. E. Ellis.

Kaiti, a good favourite, led on to the course proper in the Members’ Handicap and came on to win easily by two lengths from Taboo, who had to be ridden out to beat Marble King by half a length for second. Takutama was fourth. Oration was prominent at the straight entrance, but failed to run on.

Havering was a good favourite for the Petone Handicap, but there was backing also for Mark Mint, El Boa and others. Lucky Bag went out very fast and had a big break at the straight entrance, but -was stopping badly and Mark Mint -soon took charge to win easily by three lengths from Havering, who beat Taranto by half a length, with Black Odin and Lucky Bag next.

TURF TOPICS.

FORM AT WELLINGTON GOOD.

(By “Moturoa.”)

The Wellington meeting concludes to morrow. * * * &

Jf their fancy had missed in the Whyte Memorial, the Auckland punters would have to be “PADDIN’” it home.

New Plymouth provides the essence of consistency in Horomea and the fruits of persistency in the veteran trainer “Pere.” Johnson. More power to him!

Hopwood continues to “hop-a-long,” but the writer rather thinks that a winning bracket will be earned by Shortly shortly. The Hymestra gelding is good and ran an honest race yesterday. # #

Fairy Herald won the Winter Oats two years in succession, and his form during the meeting has been consistent to say the least of it. Taking his Whyte Memorial running, he should again be a tough proposition. # # # #

Mark Mint just got home at Wavcrley, but since then he has beaten ti good hacfe in Havering on two occasions. While Mark Mint is obviously on the improve, the punters should not forget that they have lost nothing on the Hawera galloper, and in .spite of hie being unable to head the Aucklander, he is a good hack withal.

Riders have not favoured the Aucklander, Maori Boy, and “Carbine,” of the Referee, is not inclined to compliment the rider of the Lucullus colt yesterday. This chap is not a mug galloper and those who have lost money by following him should not be too ready to dismiss him from their calculations.

The well-known English threc-year-old colt, Cragadour (Craig an Pompadour) was recently purchased by the famous Irish tenor, John McCormack, for a sum stated to run into five figures —“sold for a song,” in fact.

Hawke’s Bay form was good as far as King’s Jest was concerned, and the King Mark—Hoy gelding won as he liked yesterday. He is a class above the ordinary middle-distance performer and the showing that he made yesterday points to his being at his best.

Alaric was a good performer on the flat and over small fences when he raced under the colours of the late Waverley sportsman, Mr. Sam Price. Although he has shown an aptitude to “big country” in his schooling efforts, he has failed to reproduce that form on the track, and his win yesterday was overdue. However, he has more pace than the average ’chaser and, providing that he continues to jump well, the Marton mentor Frank McKay, should win more races with the well-bred San Fran gelding.

As anticipated in these columns, the Trcntham Hurdles were too short for the find of the season in the smaller batten category, Mister Gamp, but the Australian-bred jumper was running all over Overhaul at the finish, and the Winter Hurdles to-morrow, run over half a mile further, should suit him down to the ground. Many shrewd judges will sum up the Winter Hurdles as being ,a race in “whatever beats Mister Gamp will win.” GISBORNE STEEPLES MEETING. HANDICAPS DECLARED.
