LAST YEAR’S COLLECTION. AVERAGE LEVY OF OVER £l2. A preliminary return of revenue from taxation in the last financial year has been compiled by th© Government Statistician, the results being shown in comparison, with the final figures for preceding years, as follows:— Customs.—l 927, £8,204,474; 1928, £7,891,621; 1929, £7,954,252. Beer Duty.—l 927, £621,813; 1928, £609,624; 1929, £611,484. Land Tax —£1,229,067; £1,1'54,479; £1,140,324. Income Tax.— £3,422,216; £3,273,729; £3 310 877. Death Duties. — £1,690,374; £1,899.370; £1,967,000. Bank Composition. —£201,913; £195,301; £191,221. Duty on Instruments. — £490,527; £428,805; £438,500. Totalisator Taxes. — £583,421; £567,890; £560,300. Amusement Tax. — £63,555; £63,165; £60,600. Motor Vehicles Taxation. —£586,372; £716,477; £1,243,577. Other Taxation. — £344,095; £344,684; £35'5,000. Totals.— £17,437,827; £17,145,145; £17,833,135. Of the amount shown under the head in" of motor vehicles taxation for 1928-29 approximately £BOO,OOO represents proceeds of motor spirit taxation, £4/10,000 tyre tax, and £240,000 fees, etc under the Motor Vehicles Act. In the portion of 1927-28 during which the petrol tax was in force, the yiejd from this source amounted to £143,516. The proceeds of motor taxation are paid to the Main Highways Board, except that portion of the petrol tax allocated to boroughs. Excluding this special taxation, the total of the general taxes in 1928-29 was £16,559 508 as compared with £16,428,668 in 1927-28, and £16,851,455 in 1926-27.
