VALUELESS CHEQUES ISSUED
SWINDLER GIVEN THREE MONTHS.

William Augustine Lagan, who last weeK pleaded guilty to forging and uttering a cheque in the name of a Rotorua boardinghouse-keeper, to-day pleaded guilty in the Hamilton Court to issuing valueless cheques at Greymouth, Nelson, Ashburton and Napier to a total amount of £49 17s. Detective-Sergeant Thompson said accused belonged to a well-known. family in the South Island and felt his position keenly. He had given the police every assistance since his arrest. , Lagan was sentenced to three months imprisonment.
