THEATRES IN AUSTRALIA

GOOD BUSINESS FOR GOOD PLAYS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. After an absence of 15 years Mr Charles Westmacott, of the J. C. Williamson directorate, arrived by the Uli maroa to-day-on a short visit to the Dominion. Speaking of theatrical business generally Mr. Westmacott said his firm had nothing much to complain about, seeing that Australia was going through a big industrial depression and that the coal and timber strikes had affected business generally. But despite this' “The Desert Song” had been running since Christmas and was likely to continue for another 12 weeks. It is one of the best things wo have done,” he added.

The talkies were affecting business to some extent, Mr. Westmacott said, but that would adjust itself, and in his opinion they would never affect good shows and productions.

Lnfortunately these were difficult to get and from New York or London they had not had a surplus of good things for some time.
