INDIVISIBLE INTERESTS

TOWX AND COUNTY CO-OPERATION

FARMING AFFAIRS AND CHAMBER

“Many on my side thought I was stepping over the traces when I joined this council and that you gentleman had some ulterior motive,” said Mr. S. Vickers at the meeting of the council of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night. “Since I have had the pleasure and privilege of coming aifiong you, however, I know that there was no such motive and that the ideal aimed at was to strengthen the bonds that do exist between commercial and farming interests.” (Head! Hear!) The inaugurated by the council of having representation from farming interests and the Civil Service was the subject of very favourable comment. Mr. T. C. List said the presence of these representatives had been very helpful to the council in its deliberations, and he noticed that other chambers were following the lead given. Since his appointment to the council Mr. S. Vickers had been able to assist them materially. He thought that at all times the chamber should co-operate with farming interests, and the presence of their representative had made this co-operation more easily attainable. Mr. Vickers confirmed what Mr. List had said, and voiced the opinion that the interlocking of farming and commercial interests had been of very great value to the farming community. The chairman (Mr. E. Shaw) said there certainly had been .no ulterior motive behind the council’s request that the farmers should appoint a representative. As the affairs of the town were so closely bound up with those of the country districts, the interests of the latter had naturally figured very largely in the work of the chamber.

Mr. Vickers said that perhaps the most striking expression of the chamber’s consideration for farming interests was its ready response to a request for co-operation in connection with the recent visit of farmers from the South Island.
