SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Patea School Committee was held on Friday, Mr. R. E. Moore presiding. Messrs May, Carey, Marshall, Papps, Aker and Matthews ('head teacher) were also present. The borough council notified that the usual reduction in the water rate had been granted the committee. Mr.Hodge, architect to the Education Board, advised that completion of the heating arrangements would be arranged for shortly. The Education Board also advised that the committee’s request for the new shelter shed for girls had been granted. Permission was granted to use the old shed for wood and coal, and the old coal shed for a tool shed. It was decided that the new shed be erected on the south side of the school. Regarding the dental clinic, Mr. Hemingway, a member of the Education Board, who was present, explained that the board had decided that the clinic must be held in a separate building. The cost would be approximately £270, of which the Government would find two-thirds. It was decided that the committees of the schools interested he written to and asked to state if they are in favour of joining with the Patea committee in the establishment of a dental clinic in Patea. The visiting committee reported on matters now requiring attention, and Messrs Marshall and Aker were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. The chairman, secretary and Mr. Carey were appointed a committee to arrange details in connection with a function to celebrate the installation of the heating system at the school. The headmaster reported that the annual visit of the inspector had been held during the past week. ROAD RACE. Eight riders entered for the Patea to Manutahi and back road race on Saturday. The race was won by R. Clarkson, J. Julian being second, A. Fentonby third, and O. Close fourth. R. Clarkson, the winner, rode a very fine race and made fastest time, doing the 18 miles in 49min 45sec. The Mayor’s earthquake fund now amounts to £l2B 14s. A donation of £5O has been received from the South Taranaki and West Coast Refrigerating Company. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. and Mrs. J. Hamel, Dunedin, are on a visit to their son, Mr. F. W. Hamel, of Patea. Miss Phyllis Bourke, Whenuakura, has returned from a visit to Sydney. Mr. W. McComisky, Wellington, who has been on a visit to Patea, returned to Wellington on Monday.
