MORE QUAKES AT WESTPORT

WORK OF RECONSTRUCTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Westport, Last Night. During the night and at 11.45 this morning two big, sustained ’quakes were experienced. The day has been very wet, hampering the restoration of chimneys and other damage done, which work has been on for seven days a week. Many people are doing the work themselves, whilst carpenters, bricklayers and others have also been full 7 engaged. The prompt action of the Prime Minister in telegraphing £3OO as a preliminary grant towards the relief of distress at Seddonville is much appreciated. Mr. Laurenson, the harbour engineer, has gangs of men at work cleaning out the houses, which are in a fearful state with mud a foot thick and everything inside the houses in a most’ bedraggled condition. Many of the risidents are billetted out in other mining townships and at Westport. Mr. W. R. Simpson, Karamea, telegraphs stating that the beach there is a splendid landing ground for ’planes and could handle 50 Southern Crosses. It was just one of those misfortunes that happen in the best regulated of families that Captain Burrell’s ’plane struck the shingle—the only object on the beach that could have damaged it. The Christchurch Mayor’s earthquake relief fund now totals £7082 and The Press fund £3774.
