THE CHURCH AND POLITICS

SOUTH AFRICAN QUARREL

PREMIER “MAKING BLUNDER”

RACIAL FEAR DENOUNCED

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association. Received July 8, 12.10 a.m. • Capetown, July 6. The denunciation of the racial fear by the Bishop of Pretoria, the Rt. Rev. N. S. Talbot, having been introduced into the Nationalists’ electioneering, has been followed by the refusal of General Hertzog,' the Nationalist Premier, to attend the thanksgiving service for the King’s recovery at the English Cathedral at Pretoria, which he previously intended to do. He has intimated he will attend a Dutch service.

Tho Premier, interviewed, said if the church decided to participate in politics it must expect some repercussion.

The Rand Mail states General Hertzog is committing a blunder which will be hard to forgive and forget, and recalls the bitter outbursts of his clerical supporters.
