WANGANUI BEAT TARANAKI

HARTLES PROVES ABILITY PREVENTED RUNAWAY VICTORY. TARANAKI JUNIORS WIN GAME. (By Wire —Special Reporter.) Wanganui, Last Night. A return match between Taranaki •nd Wanganui Soccer representatives s>layed on Cook’s Gardens yesterday in deal weather, was won by Wanganui by four goals to one. The ground was in good condition. The game was rather disappointing from the spectacular point of view, but there was no doubt about Wanganui’s •win. The first spell failed to produce a score mainly through the ability of Hartles (Hawera Celtic), the visiting goalkeeper. In the second spell the pressure told and Wanganui emerged winners by tour goals to one. Taranaki were first to attack but were sent back by Walker. After Kandell had sent Wanganui back a fine shot from the visitors’ right went close. Taranaki were dangerous for a time and then Wanganui had a chance, Heath ■ending high over. Wanganui’s hopes were raised by a corner, but Randell cleared well. Holland set the Wanganui forwards going, Heath having a great shot that was well saved by Hartles. Following a period of midfield play Wanganui attacked for a fruitless corner. Good forcing work by Baker put Taranaki on the attack, Campbell eventually shooting past. Holland was next conspicuous with good leading out .work, Clapham/ finishing by shooting high over the bar., Proudfoot sent out to his wing, but Hartles saved easily. The game was running more in Wanganui’s favour, Dickson having a good try from well put, but just cleared the bar. ’ Campbell (Taranaki) got the better of a bout with Neilson, but A. Walker Came to the rescue. A cross-shot into the goal mouth from Dick brought Hartles into action, the goalie bringing off a good save. A great chance came to the visitors when Upshall got away on his own, but the winger shot weakly past. Taranaki instituted a hot attack, a shot from Bremer coming near to counting. Randell was showing up well for Taranaki, sending the home team back repeatedly by fine kicking. Following a period of rather featureless play Proudfoot let Clapham away, but Hartles was. well on the spot to ■ave the Wanganui winger’s shot. Keeping at it Wanganui pressed hotly, Holland shooting well only to see Hartles bring off another great save. Dickson let Clapham away with a clear field, but the winger tried a shot when a pass into the centre would have paid better. Midfield play ruled until halftime, which arrived with the score sheet ftill blank. Wanganui resumed briskly and attacked hotly, Heath having a couple of tries which missed narrowly. Hartles had" to look lively to stop another. Proudfoot let Clapham away again and bhe winger crossed well, but Hartles •gain saved in good fashion. The game was running all in favour of Wanganui, the visitors 'being very seldom over half-way. The shooting, however, was very poor, Hartles not being troubled. At this stage of the game Taranaki came more into the picture, Walkei having to save twice. The home team was soon back again, Hartles having to eave twice in quick succession. Wanganui eventually got the ball into the net, but offside nullified the point. A high dropping shot from Baker (Taranaki) nearly counted, Walker just punching out in time. Play ranged from end to end with Wanganui always having the better of it. Wanganui were first to score. JamieBon gave the’ ball to Proudfoot, who transferred to Holland. The centre, placed the ball in the net. Play quietened down, but a couple of good saves by Hartles livened up things. A sudden burst by Taranaki enabled Upshall to ■end in an equaliser. Wanganui were not long in regaining the lead, Dickeon placing the ball well for Heath to beat Hartles. Ibbotson then had a try for Taranaki, but Walker saved finely. Heath soon put Wanganui further in the lead. The visitois had a bit of luck when the ball struck the bar when Hartles was beaten. Wanganui soon went further ahead when Dickson sent in a great shot, which Hartles stopped but could not bold, and Heath placed the ball in the net. The end came soon afterwards with fche score:
