AN EXTENSION OF TIME

AMUSING SCENE IX, HOUSE. • (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter), < Wellington, La.pt Night. An amusing incident occurred in th< House of. Representatives to-day, when it was proposed by-Mr. A. Bodkhi, mover of the Address-in-Reply, that the Leader of. the Opposition (Mr. J. <?, Coates)., fihoujd be granted, an extension of time in whicli to corhpiet?.his speedj in the debate,, When such; a. proposition has bpen .'made it is necessary that it shall be carried by the, unanimous vote of the House if the member is to continue.

On it being moved that. Mr. Coates should have an "extension, the Speaker (Sir Charles Statham) put tlie question to the House. , 1... .

. “No!” thundered Mr. McDougall, “let us get on with the business bf the House.”

A burst of laughter was evoked by. Mr.; McDougall’s somewhat unusual action, but Mr. Coates immediately sat down to await his fate. ‘■Does the member insist?” inquired Mr. Speaker of Mr. McDougall. Mr. McDougall did not .press his oh- ‘ jection and Mr. Coates was allowed to proceed. , , “I want to express my appreciation of the courtesy of the member,” sadi Mr. Coates, "and particularly should I like to thank the mover of the Address-in-Rcply and to say that one good turh deserves another.” (Laughter).
