NEW BRIDGE ACROSS TYNE

In order to open to morrow tho new bridge which spans the Tyne River at Newcastle, the King and Queen will break their journey from Balmoral, where they have recently been in residence. The two existing railway bridges across the Tyne at Newcastle were also opened by Royalty, one of them, built by the great engineer Robert Stephenson, being opened by Queen Victoria in 1849. The new bridge is intended for road traffic only. It is a high level bridge of a single span. It is 531 feet long and is the largest steel arch yet constructed in this country, although the similar steel areh now being built over tho Sydney harbour is more than three times as long. The totaj expenditure on the bridge and its approaches exceeds £1,000,000.
