MAN SHOT DOWN IN STREET

SYDNEY GANG WAR REVIVED

INJURED MAN MAY RECOVER GUNMAN ESCAPES IN MOTOR By Telegraph—Tress Assn.—Copyright. .Australian Press Association. Received Oct, 7, 5.5 pan. Sydney, Oct. 7. The gang war in Sydney, which has been qiiiescent for several months, was renewed last night when a gunman stepped from a taxi and shot down a pedestrian at the corner of Foveaux and Terry Streets, Surry Hills. The victim was William Dillon, aged 56, who was sent to hospital with two bullet wounds. The doctors hope he will recover. The police are searching for the taxi. Apparently apart from the occupants of the cab only one eye-witness was present. He was a business man named Carrington, who was walking along Foveaux Street. He was actually between the gun and Dillon before the shots were fired. A man with his head bandaged sprang from the car, walked towards Carrington and, as the latter r oved aside, the man said: “Now I’ve got you.” A shot rang put. Dillon, who was behind Carrington, sagged to the ground. A second shot was fired as he fell. The gunman then re-entered the cab, ■ which sped away into Elizabeth Street. ' All passed in a few seconds, Carring- ' ton turned to aid the injured man, who J was bleeding from the mouth and chest, and the assailant was gone.
