ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

MATCH WITH WANGANUI TEAM KEMPTHORNE PROSSER LOSE, I—s. FAST GAME TO THE CALEDONIANS

One of the fastest Association football matches teen ir. New P'ymoutli this season was played at pukekura Park on Saturday, when Caledonians defeated Kempthome, Prosser’s (Wanganui) by 5 goals to 1. Though Caledonians, as'the scores would indicate, had much the greater share because of their superior combination, the game was by no means devoid of interest. The visitors never became disheartened in the face ■of a long succession of thrusting movements by players who understood one another perfectly. Had their defence not been so good the score against them would have been higher still. This is the second occasion this season on which the Kempthorne-Prosser team has been beaten by Caledonians, the other game having been played at Wanganui. The weather was ideal, the sun shining brightly and the oval being sheltered from the wind. There was a fair attendance. A refreshing feature of the game was the manner in which it was refereed by Mr B. B. Wilson. Without using the whistle too often, he always had the players admirably under control. Caledonians kicked off with the sun in their faces. After up and down play for somo minutes, Bremer landed a finely placed goal past Martin. Again the home team attacked, but Phillips sent away when Hill tried for a shooting position. Momentarily play was transferred to the other end, but L. Henderson, Bremer and Rae took the ball back. Phillips kicked away again. Another Caledonian onslaught ended in the ball going behind. Shortly afterwards Kempthorne’s conceded, a corner after Hill had tried for the net. Caledonians were playing a magnificent combined game and when the visitors attacked it was not long before L. Henderson took down the side. Eventually Gardner received and netted a fine goal, Caledonians’ second. Jemieson put in a tame shot that Bell had no difficulty in saving. A second attempt was similarly dealt with. Then Rae tried a shot at the other end and Hill headed it on towards the net. Martin saved. Caledonians were a fine attacking combination and kept the visitors busy. The Wanganuites were by no means outclassed, however, and twice in succession Jemieson headed on shots from Neilson. Bell saved both times. Following a kick upfield by. O’Neill, Henderson received, but was stopped by Gilroy. Proudfoot headed away a long shot. Neilson made a solo attack on Caledonians’ net, but was blocked. A long shot by Rae went over the bar. Hope put in a fine centre, which was well deflected by O'Neill. Another visitor shot the ball on, however, for Bell to save. Langslow put in a shot which, despite O’Neill's great effort, trickled into Caledonians’ net. The whistle for offside prevented a score being registered, however. L. Henderson took the ball up the side and sent to Gardner, but Proudfoot kicked away. Murray returned and Hill had a shot that went behind. Several more attempts were saved by Martin. Dick lobbed in a long shot for Bell to stop. L. Henderson and Murray sent down, Hill receiving on the side, but his shot was blocked. Caledonians were still attacking when half-time sounded.

After the interval Caledonians were soon around their opponents’ net, but relief came when they kicked behind. Desultory attacks on the visitors’ net followed, but the ball was always sent back before it reached Martin. Then, as the result of a pretty piece of passing, Hill received to test Martin. Shortly afterwards Hill again had an opportunity and this time managed to pass the goalie for Caledonians’ third point. Henderson received on the side and dribbled in but was bustled. and shot wide. Again Henderson received, his shot going over the bar. Then Kempthorne’s scored their first point after a passing movement from which Phillips emerged to net the ball. At the other end Hill came along the side and sent in to Gardner and Bremer, the latter going on to score Caledonians’ fourth. Hill again sped along the side and Martin came out t° save. A dangerous situation for th© visitors was averted by a saving kick by McKay. The Wanganui team then took a turn at attacking and for several minutes Caledonians’ goal was in danger. Then Bremer filled the breach and sent away. A long shot to Caledonians’ net was finely caught by Bell. Gardner produced a fine piece of play when he went solo for the goal and passed several defenders only to be held up by Proudfoot. Rae sent in a long shot that was returned to him. He kicked again and Gardner, who was waiting, shot the ball on for Martin to save. At this stage Gard..er was several times prominent in the siege that was laid to the visitors’ net. Fawcett continued to display good judgment in feeding his forwards and in acting as a stopper when the ball was sent in towards his own net. Kempthorne’s gave Caledonians some anxious moments. First a shot went over the bar and then Bell made a very fine save. Play returning to the other end, Hill sent in a hot one for Martin to save. Almost immediately the same player received again and gave Martin no chance to stop the fifth goal. Murray, Fawcett, Henderson and Bremer combined well to send in to Gardner in front of the net. Martin saied, however. Jemieson and Gilroy were associated in an attack on the othei end, but Bell ran out to send away before Gilroy could shoot. There was no further score and the game ended:— Caledonians 5 Kempthorne’ Prosser's 1 ALBION CLUB’S RECORD. NEW TEAM DOES WELL.
