TIMARU-CHRISTCHURCH

W.O. ARNST WINS ROAD RACE FASTEST TIME TO S. W. McCANN. TROTEST AGAINST THE WINNER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Oct. 6. A traditional nor-wester prevailed for the Timaru to Christchurch road race to-day. There were many patches of loose shingle with clouds of dust rising on parts of the road between Ashburton and Christchurch. The limit men got away sharp to time at 9.5 a.m., and it was 3.25 when the winner entered the showground to the accompaniment of a burst of cheering. The winner was B. W. Arnst, who ■won the big amateur road race last Saturday but was disqualified for allegedly accepting motor pace. To-day he could find no one w’ho would ride fast enough to please him, and for practically the whole journey he rode alone. He is a young rider who should be heard of as his famous uncles, Jack and Dick Arnst, were in their day. The fastest time was made by S. W. McCann (New Plymouth), who, like Arnst, had to make his own pace. Turning Into Lincoln Road he showed an amazing burst of speed of 27 miles an hour to ride in alone in fifth place. The placings of the first twelve men home were:— B. VV. Arnst (40min), 6hr 12min 49sec I M- lass (50min), 6hr 27min 9sec ... 2 A. C. Hill (37min), Ghr 14min 12see 3 H. Gooch, Hokitika (38min), iihr 24min 29sec 12 Immediately after the finish a protest was lodged against Arnst on the ground that he entered for the race after the entries were closed. It is said to be very unlikely that the protest ■will be sustained, for the executive of the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union’ met last- week in conference, the decision being to accept the late entries. Arnst entered for the race on Tuesday. AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. SCRATCH MAN PROVES WINNER. Auckland, Last Night. The 50 miles Auckland amateur cycling championship, held on Saturday, ■was won by J. Whitten (scratch) in the Tecord time of 2hr 16min. C. A. Clark (Bmin) was second and W. Dwight (6min) third. Times were 2hr 24min55 sec and 2hr 22min 22sec respectively. J. H. Wade fell. As the eyelists neared Inglewood, 'Way, Doig, Christiansen and Rielly were leading. Christiansen when riding well touched another rider’s wheel, fell and lost a lot of ground. At the turn, Way, Rielly and Doig turned in that Order. Christiansen followed one minute later, riding alone. Beer and Taunt arrived 2mins behind the leaders and were followed 2J minutes later by Smith, Wiley, Ellis, Piumtree and Lehrke. Tippins and Hookham were 1J minutes behind the bunch, and were followed by the scratch man, Yardley, Tiding alone. At Lepperton the positions were unchanged, but the groups had closed up. At Bell Block, Beer and Taunt were only a few seconds behind the leaders gnd it looked as if the race was theirs. In the final sprint for the line, Way rode strongly and won by five lengths from Doig, who was about 10 lengths ahead of Rielly. Beer was fourth. The next bunch of seven riders provided a great finish. Wiley showed out in front closely followed by Plumtree and Lehrke. Lehrke hung on longest and crossed the line about six inches ahead of Plumtree and Wiley. Tippins and Hookham were the next to arrive and Tippins crossed the line a length ahead of Hookham, who did not exert himself at th© finish as he had not been able to assist Tippins over the later stages of the race.
