(From Our Own Correspondent). The usual, monthly meeting of the fire brigade was held, on” Tuesday evening last, when Superintendent A. Melville presided over a full muster of members with one exception. It was decided that the secretary write and ask a Wellington firm to forward samples of the different grades of brigade hose quoted. The statement of the recent annual ball was presented by the secretary, showing a credit balance of £ll 19s 6d. The superintendent reminded members that the annual conference and demonstration were to take place in the early part of March at Hokitika, and he would like a team of four members to go down if possible. Since the meeting, practice has been started in earnest by most members. Following a practical demonstration of a chemical fireextinguisher the brigade decided to purchase one. ■

On Friday afternoon a street stall was conducted under the auspices of the ladies’ croquet club by Mesdames C. H. Brewer, J. A. Dawson and A. Melville. IViere was a plentiful supply of vegetables, flowers, and many other useful and saleable articles were disposed of at satisfactory prices. The results of the day’s takings more than exceeded the hopes of those concerned. The opening function in connection with the south division of the band carnival for which Mr. and Mrs. A. Guy’s baby has been nominated, was held at Mrs. Blackwell’s boarding house on Thursday evening, when between some thirty and forty supporters gathered to spend a very pleasant evening. The first part wa« devoted to a euchre tourney, in which there were six tables, under the charge of Mr. E. W. Blackwell. Mrs. J. Tattersail won the ladies’ prize, and Mr. G. Boyle the gents’, while the eoneolation prizes went to Miss A. White and Mr. W. Garring. After a dainty supper, songs were contributed by Messrs. A. Guy and M. Chong, while at intervals an ice cream stall and novelty items and competitions helped to assist the fundconsiderably. PERSONAL. Mr. A- .R. Bates is at present on tfn extended visit to Christchurch. We are pleased to say that Mr. B. 1 (Ben) Joyce, who has been seriously ill with pneumonia for some time past, is now making good progress, and hopes in a short time to be up and about again. We are also pleased to report an improvement in the condition of Mr. A. Williams, of Manaia Hoad, who recently met with a severe accident.
