PLANE CRASHES INTO RIVER

FOUR MEN SWIM ASHORE! Vancouver, Sept. 26. A message from Edmonton, Alberta, says the presence of mind of one of four aviators, who opened the cabin door before their huge plane nose-dived into the Peace River, probably saved the lives of Squadron-Leader Godfrey, WingCommanders Gordon and Breadner, and Mechanic-Major Graham. Dense smoke caused a forced landing, but the seaplane sank to the wings. The four men escaped under water to the wings, and were then compelled to swim several hundred feet to the shore.

From the opposite shore one of a party, led by General Meßae, Federal member for North Vancouver, saw what he believed to be Douk’hobors (a Russian religious sect) drying their clothes, but on repeated signals he put out a boat and rescued the airmen. Without radio and far from the nearest Peace River village, the party was missing for eight days. Tho plane was a wreck.

Squadron-Leader Godfrey, after a 5000-mil© flight from Ottawa, Vancouver, and Prince Rupert to tho Peace River, on a survey, was returning to Ottawa.
