Mr. W. P. Okey returned to New. Plymouth yesterday after a short holiday spent in Auckland. Condolence with Mr. Hugh Purdie in the death of his wjfe was expressed at a meeting of the Taranaki Agricultural Society yesterday. Mr. Frank O’Connor, goods foreman of the New Plymouth railways, with Mrs. O’Connor and family, returned last evening after six weeks’ holiday in Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Lieutenant A. T. King, weapon training instructor in the Central .Command, who has been conducting classes' in New Plmouth for officers and N.C,o.’s, for a fortnight, returned to Palmerston North yesterday. Captain A. Jackson, who is to retire after 45 years at sea on the return of the lonic to England, was tendered a luncheon on board the lonic at Auckland yesterday, when various shipping interests were represented. He was for thirty years employed on ships of tho White Star Line, reports the Press Association. Members of the Opunake Harbour Board yesterday passed a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the lato Mr. C. H. Hurst, and it was resolved to place on record the board’s appreciation of his valued services as a member and deputy-chairman during his long association with the board. Tho chairman (Mr. T. P. Hughson) paid a fins tribute to the lato member, whom ho characterised as “a Christian gentleman of sterling character and bright disposition.” With one exception the late Mr. Hurst was the oldest member of the board, having been appointed by the county council in January, 1914, on the resignation of the chairman, Mr. McReynolds, six months after the Inception of the board.
