PATEA BOXING TOURNEY
LARGE HOUSE AND GOOD FIGHTS. FINE TALENT EXHIBITED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Patea Boxing Association held its second tournament last night before a good house. AU bouts were staged according to programme, and the tournament was acclaimed one of the best ever seen here. Results were:—Paperweight.—Gordon (Patea) 4.11, beat McDowell (Wanganui) 5.5. A very willing bout, both boys mixing things in a lively fashion and showing good boxing . abilities. Gordon’s aggressiveness earned him a popular win. -»■ Welterweight.—Dombroski (New Plymouth) 10.fi, beat Clarke (Wanganui) 9.12. Dombroski landed a heavy left uppercut to Clarke’s jaw in the first round, the latter frequently smothering and on the defensive. Clarke caused Dombroski to miss badly in the second round and scored in the infighting. Dombroski scored with left uppercuts, causing Clarke to again smother. Clarke kept off and caused Dombroski to miss frequently, but the latter chased him round the ring and, sending in heavy lefts and rights, had Clarke in difficulties in the fourth round. By clever footwork Dombroski manoeuvred a hard left swing which staggered Clarke, who fought on gamely. A heavy right from Dombroski put Clarke down for three Clarke rose gamely but his seconds threw in the towel.
Lightweight.:—Walker (Wanganui} 10.10, beat Bradmorg (Patea) 11.2. Boxing with determination Walker scored well with both hands at close quarters. Bradmore replied with straight lefts and made use of good footwork. Walker, however, proved too hardy for him and, pressing Bradmore, had him groggy in the third round. The Patea boy boxed well, but was up against a much harder fighter. Middleweight.—Scown (Patea) 11.2, drew with Thomas (Wanganui) 10.10 Thomas was the lighter and shorter and endeavoured to make it a close fight. Scown cleverly evaded him and scored well with rights to the head. Thomas landed a weighty left to Scown’s nose in the second round, but the latter replied with telling right, uppercuts. The fight was uninteresting, both boys clinching frequently. Scown fought well in the final round, putting in right rips and outboxing Thomas. The decision met with a mixed. reception. Lightweight.—Candy (Feilding) 10.3, beat McLelland (Marton) 10.11. Possessing a longer reach, Candy sent over rapid straight lefts to McLeliand’s face, drawing blood in the first z round. Candy was swifter and landed a good rightcross to AlcLelland’s head, to which the latter replied with left swings. Both boxed cleanly with little clinching. Candy got the better of the exchanges and pasted McLelland with his lightning straight lefts. McLelland replied willingly but ineffectively, his opponent being sound in defence. Flyweight.—Ranger (Patea) 7.9, beat Skelton (Wanganui) 7.11, It was a 'popular win. Lightweight.—C. Craig (South Auckland) 9.4, beat Mercer (Patea) 9.4. Donovan (Waitara) 9.1, beat A. Craig (South Auckland) 9.4. Conceding height and reach, Donovan pressed the fight throughout, scoring well at close quarters. Craig had little chance to corner his hardy opponent. Craig boxed better as the rounds proceeded, but Donovan kept the fight as close as possible, scoring heavily with disastrous right halfarm jolts' to Craig’s jaw. Craig got home ' some good straight lefts in the fourth round, but Donovan replied with hard body blows and showed no signs of slackening the pace. Endeavouring to force the issue, Donovan landed a hard right to Craig’s eye, which noticeably slowed the latter. Donovan never once let up aggressiveness and received a well-merited decision.
