NATIONAL FUEL ECONOMY

COMMITTEE’S RECOMMENDATIONS. British Official Wireless. Rugby, Sept. 21. The national fuel and power committee appointed by the Board of Trade under the chairmanship of Lord Melchett, recommended a report published to-day, the industrial leaders in fuelproducing and fuel-consumption industries to consider the need for co-opera-tion with universities by indicating responsible positions that are open on the executive side of their business for men trained in fuel technology. The Board of Education should also consider what might be done in institutions supervised by them to contribute to training men with the desired qualifications. The iron and steel industry should give greater support to its fuel economy committee, both by providing it with sufficient funds and by actively co-operating in its work through placing at its disposal all the necessary information of new or improved practices and referring to it in all cases of difficulty. All large coal consuming industries should consider the desirability of adopting on a much larger scale than is the present practice the exchange of men experienced in fuel technology, if possible through central associations financed by small levies. Large consumers are advised to pay more attention to the system of buying and selling coal to specification, and colliery owners to classify their coal as far as possible according to some agreed standards.
