SCOUT MOVEMENT IN HAWERA.
PRESENTATION OF BADGES. A large number of enthusiastic scouts, cubs and their friends attended the scouts’ social and presentation of badges last night. Mr. J. A. Dalgetty presided. An apology was received from Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., who presented the Hawera troop with a . substantial cheque for equipment, wishing the troop, prosperity .and success for the future. Commissioner F. W. Horner attended and after a brief inspection the selected cubs were presented with badges, caps, etc., and promoted to the rank of scouts. Scoutmaster Cowie and Cubmaster Hitchcock assisted in the initiating ceremony. In referring to the inspection, Commissioner Horner said he was pleased to hear the scouts name their various qualifications for promotion, and he was certain that friends present were bound to admit this training embodied a good deal of useful work of value to themselves and to the citizens in general. The public’s thanks were due to the scoutmasters and assistants, and he trusted this service would commend itself to them.
During the evening the commissioner, on behalf of the Hawera troop, made a presentation to Mr. E. Dixon, who had retired from the citizens’ committee. He referred to the activities of Mr. Dixon, as chairman of the committee, on behalf of the scout movement, and of the young people of the district generally. Through his enthusiasm the scout hall was an accomplished fact. Mr. Dixon replied, saying that though he was retiring from the office he would continue to be interested in the scouts, and he trusted that the movement would continue to prosper. Mesdames Burrell, Evans, Ashton and Adams were presented with badges in recognition of their services in a social capacity. Elocutionary and. musical items were given by friends, and supper was served*
