The Empire Day ball to be held in St. Mary’s Hail on Thursday evening promises to surpass in brilliance even last year's gathering. Miss D. Howard Webb and her partner will give an exhibition of the Yale Blues and a sword dance will be performed by members of Miss Hilda Taylor’s folk dancing class. Another feature of the evening will be the waltz, now called old fashioned, danced to the tune of the “Blue Danube.’’ Miss Dora Bedford will supervise a rehearsal of the lancers in St. Mary’s Hall at 5 p.m. on Monday.

Following the exhibition of folk dancirg in St. Mary’s Hall on Thursday evening, an informal supper was provided by the dancers. On behalf of members of the class Mrs. H. E. Aycklourn presented the instructress. Miss Hilda Taylor, with a greenstone mere. A dainty Victorian posy in pale pink, mauve and blue was presented Miss C. Teatham, who acted as accompanist during the evening. After the singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows’’ cheers were given for the guerts of jhonour.

Last Monday Mrs. J. B Groom gave • most delightful evening for the young folk at her home, “Ceres," Bell Block. Musical items were rendered, and games end dancing were indulged in. Prizes were also presented to the winners. A Very dainty supper was handed round. Mr. Billie Ansford, on behalf of the young people, thanked Mr. and Mrs. Croom for their hospitality. Mr. Groom suitably responded. The guests of the evening were- their three nieces: Misses Elsa Penwarden (Rahotu), Jean Guy (Kaponga), Vera Hall (Hillsborough).

’I he pleasant little evening was brought to a close by singing “Auld Ixing Syne.” NORTH EGMONT HOSTEL. There has been a constant stream of visitors to the North Egmont Hostelry leeently, amongst them being, a party from Havelock North, Hawkes Bay. Also, Mrs, Tanner, Miss C. Hunter Miss G Fryer, Miss Nancy Tanner, Mr. and Mrs. Morrison (London), Mr. Ronald Sutherland (Sydney), Mr. N. H. Reynolds (Wellington), Mrs. Walter Blundell and Miss Sylvia Wilson (Wellington), Mr. and Mrs H. E. Chamberlain (Auckland), Mrs. and Miss Hempton (Wellington), Sir John and Lady Bell Calcutta), Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Fraser and family (New Plymouth), Mr. and Mrs. Worrall and child. Mr. and Mrs. Cruickshank entertained a few friends at afternoon tea on Saturday afternoon.
