WAITARA SEASIDE PICNIC

enjoyable day s outing. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Waitara Seaside Society held its annual picnic yesterday in glorious weather, the town observing a whole holiday for the event. The attendance was disappointing. No doubt the counter attraction of the Australian cricket match took a number who would otherwise have been present. However, those present had an enjoyable time, the committee keeping things moving. The Waitara Band was present under the conductorship of Mr. Heron, who had arrived from Dargaville only on Tuesday to take over the band. Under the circumstances they gave a very creditable performance which' augured well for the future.

The officials responsible for the gathering were: President, Mr. L. H. Sampson; vice-president, Mr. E. A. George; secretary, Mr. W. Middleton; sports committee, Messrs. A. Chadwick, T. Taylor, Tate (2), T. Fowler; official announcer, the Rev. J. H. Coombes; in charge of side shows, Messrs. J. R. Bennett, A. Rawles, D. H. Purdie, J. H. Kibby, A. Chittenden, W. Wordsworth, Carroll and Byron; sheep-guessing, Mr. J. Hughson; ’ sweet stall, Mesdames Uattenbury and Jones; tea rooms, Mesdames Brabant, Wordsworth, Cooney, Hughson, Herman and Radford. The results of the races and competitions are as follow: —

The open cycle race on the programme was'not run owing to there being insufficient entries. Apart from these rates and side shows which, by the way, did good business, the surf was well patronised by bathers, and the swings, chutes and see saws were occupied all day.
