HUTT LAND ACT AMENDMENT., EXTERMINATION OF ’ FIREBLIGHT. By Telegraph:-- Press Avsoe-iatian. Wellington, Last Night. Tn the House of Representatives tonight the Hutt Valley Land Settlement Amendment BiU'was introduced by Gov-ernor-General’s message. The Minister of Justice explained that the Bill was designed to give legal effect to the contract entered into by the tenants of Hutt lands to prevent speculation in lands purchased by them from the-Government. The Bill was read a first time. The Hon. 0. J. Hawkcn moved that the Orchard Tax Bill be’committed. He explained that the Bill was promoted at the request of fruitgrowers and was designed to re-impose an orchard tax in a different way and to eliminate fireblight by the destruction of hawthorn hedges. Members thought some compensation should be given to those farmers who had already destroyed their hawthorn hsdges. The House then -went into committee on the Orchard Tax Bill,, the Apiaries Bill and the Magistrates’ Courts’ Amend, ment Bill. The first two Bills were passed through the committee stage and progress was reported on the -MagistralCourts Amendment, and the Orchard Tax Bill and the Apiaries’ Bill were read a third time and passed. The House rose at 12.55 a.m. til) 2.30 p.m. LEGISLATIVE council. PRIVILEGES INFRINGED. Wellington, Last Night. Tbo Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. to-day. Four days’ leave of absence was granted to the Hon. G, Willy on account of illness in hrs’ family. Mr. Speaker ruled that the Council had infringed the privileges of the House in the amendment it had made in the Land for Settlements Amendment Bill, am' accordingly the Leader of the Council, Sir Francis Beil, moved that th- Council do not insist on its amendment. This was carried. The Customs Amendment Bill was 14,e. .ed from the House and :fad a. first time, being set down for the second reading to-morrow. The Council adjourned at 3.5 p.m. x
