TE KOOLI'S LIEUTENANT

Taihuko, lieutenant of Te Kooti, who shared with the latter deportation to the Chathams and subsequent fighting, but later became a loyalist, has died at Waiherere. His age is uncertain, but must be over 80 years. Taihuka always insisted that the Poverty Bay massacre in 1868 would not have happened had the escaped deportees been allowed to seek their goal in the wild country about Taupo.
