PRAISE FOR THE PILOT

CAPTAIN WALLER EULOGISED.

Captain W. Kershaw, commander of the s-s. Mataroa, was greatly impressed by the skill and judgment displayed by Captain Waller, harbourmaster at New Plymouth, in berthing his vessel on October 0. In a letter forwarded to the Harbour Board the following day, Captain Kershaw remarked that on entering the harbour the previous day under circumstances which were not by any means favourable, he was particularly struck with the skill and judgment shown by Captain Waller in handling a big light ship in the way he did. After the ship was made fast, Captain Waller told him of the unfortunate accident he had in handling the s.s. Kent, which confirmed his opinion that if Captain Waller could handle his ship the same day in the able way he did, he was a man who, without doubt, was a master of his profession. The writer stated that he had been in command of large turbine steamers for many years and he could assure the board that he had never seen his ship handled with so much confidence and assurance as that with which Captain Waller had handled the Mataroa, and he had every good reason to congratulate Captain Waller on his work when he left the ship.
