GENERAL ITEMS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Inglewood cricketers opened the season on Thursday with a friendly match with Eltham, at Inglewood. Inglewood batted first and made 95 runs, and Elthem, in reply, ;ould only reach 75. Harris (20) and Devereaux (18) were the most successful Inglewood batsmen, while Groves (five wickets for 14 runs) secured the best average for the Eltham bowlers. Bowling for Inglewood, Arthur took five wickets for nine runs. Conditions were ideal for the opening of the Inglewood Bowling Club’s green on Thursday afternoon. There was a very large attendance, and other clubs were strongly represented. The president (Mr. F. Longbottom) welcomed the visitors. A match, president v. vicepresident, was played, the result being a win for the president’s team by 201 points to 197. The Municipal Band held a very successful ball in the Town Hail on Thursday evening. The hall had been very prettily deeorated. The band orchestra provided the music and the dancers seemed thoroughly to enjoy the evening. Bandsman Scott made an efficient M.C. The final of a series of cycle races was held in beautiful weather on Thursday afternoon, the course being to Tariki and back. Twelve riders faced the starter. The result was: C. Parker (ser), 1; C. Hellicr (scr), 2; M. Sissons (2min 40sec), 3. The first members of the Inglewood Cycle Club to finish, thereby securing points in the competition, were: Fitzherbert (4), Sehrider (2), and Bocock (1). (3), Frewin (2), Sutton (1), Spurdie (1). The local Druids rrailer Arch Druid Bro. Kenny went to IVaitara on Tuesday evening to take part in the Pellew Shield competition for North Taranaki lodges. Waitara Lodge was successful. The Rev. J. H. Boyd, who has been attending a summer school of theology at Palmerston North during the past 10 'days, returned to Inglewood last night. I Old-time residents will be interested to know that Mr. and Mrs. Jack Perry are visiting Miss Trimble, “Riversdale,” Inglewood. After 18 days’ beautiful weather — surely a record in Inglewood for this time of the year —a light rain has now set in and this will be greatly welcomed by farmers and gardeners.
