DAYLIGHT SAVING BILL

ATTITUDE OF OTAGO FARMERS. OPINION EVENLY DIVIDED. By Telegraph,—l’ress Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The attitude of Otago farmers in regard to the proposed Daylight Saving Bill was expressed at the 27th annual conference of the Otago provincial council of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union which opened here this morning. The president, Mr. John Preston, presided over an attendance of 43 delegates. Mr. F. Lawrence moved “that this conference reiterates its protest against the proposed Bill dealing with daylight saving.” Mr. Robertson said he failed to see how primary production would be increased by putting the clock back an hour. The scheme would prove a hardship for the rising generation who had plenty to do in the country already. It was a move on the part of city sportsmen and was not calculated to help the farmer. Mr. Murray pointed out that the North Canterbury Farmers’ Union was the only farmers’ body to agree with the Bill. Speaking in favour of daylight saving, Mr. Waite said* it was wrong to say the majority of farmers opposed it. In Otago it was already in operation in a hundred ways. “Then why legislate, for.it?” asked Mr. Murray. Mr. .Waite replied, that it was. necessary to help people out in some walks of life. Mr. R. J. E. Smith said he was in agreement with the measure. An hour in the morning was worth two at night, and if once tried they would never want to do without it. On being put to the meeting the remit was carried on the casting vote of the chairman.
