STRIKE AND A BATTLE

AN IRISH BOARD MEETING. BLACK EYE AND TORN SHIRT. There was an extraordinary end to a meeting in Belfast recently of the Monaghan County Board of Health, which had been summoned to deal with a strike of female attendants in the hospital. A debate began concerning the duties of the staff, and there was a certain amount of liveliness. The chairman, Mr. F. Duffy, ordered Mr. J. McGahey, a member, to sit down, but the latter, banging his fist on the table, eaid he would not. Business could not be proceeded with, and the chairman adjourned the meeting, shout ng as he left the room, “Come on, McGahey.” This invitation proved too tempting for Mr. McGahey, who leaving .his overcoat with the other members, who tried to restrain him, dashed downstairs after the chairman. T 1 two retired to the rear of the board room, where, divested of their coats, they fought with such determination that the attempts of officials to separate them were unavailing. ■ Zhen the noise of “battle” had died away, Mr. McGahey was seen to have h I his shirt torn, and to have secured a black eye, while the ehairman bore unmistakable traces of the combat. In the meantime the strike at the hospital continued.
