MR. L. F. AYSON RETIRES

ACCLIMATISATION SERVICES. Mr. L. F. Ayson, who recently retired from the position of Chief Inspector of Fisheries, was presented in Wellington last Friday, on behalf of the assembled staff of the fisheries branch of the Marine Department, with a wallet of notes by the Minister of Marine, the Hon. G. J. Anderson, in token of the happy relations that had existed over 28 years, and of their appreciation of his character and work. Mr. Ayson’s services have covered many activities, all of which were touched upon by Mr. Anderson. Apart from the head office staff, local officers had joined in the presentation, said the Minister, and it might be of particular interest to Mr. Ayson to know that the whole of the staff of the Auckland shipping and fisheries branch, with whom Mr. Ayson had been in intimate business contact for some years past, had specially asked to be allowed to be associated in the presentation. Mr. Ayson, in replying, said he regretted that, owing to throat affection, he could not say all that he would have wished, but he thanked them for all the kind things they had said about him, and for their valued present, and especially for the kind thought of the Auckland office. He said that a great future lay ahead of the New Zealand fisheries, which he felt sure would give great results in the hands of his successor, Mr. A. E. Hefford, who would take a keen interest in the salmon, and also in the rock oysters. He hoped the department would give Mr. Hefford all the assistance he would need in staff and other ways.
