WAITARA NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Jan. 7. The Waitara Bowling Club was represented by two rinks at the New Year Tournament. Fuller’s rink did remarkably well in winning all their section games, but had the misfortune to get upended by Honeyfield in the post-section play. The residents on the east side of the Waitara River are moving, with a view to improving the beach and its surroundings, by calling a meeting for the purpose of forming a committee and working bee. Several years ago an East Beach society was in existence and good work was done, but like the west side, had the misfortune to lose their bathing-shed by sea erosion, and further efforts seemed to die with their misfortune. New Year’s Eve passed off quietly, there being not the crowds lining the streets as in yeans gone by. Probably this is on account of the advent of the motor—New Plymouth being easy of access by private as well as service car. The passing, of the old year, and the initiating of the new was done in the customary manner by the manipulation of the freezing works’ whistle and fireworks. At the Waiau Bridge, Onaero, yesterday, a motor-car driven by a hawker capsized into the stream. -No harm was done to the driver, but the car still remains to be extricated before the damage can be assessed. Friends of Mrs. J. Kelly, of Waitara, will regret to hear of the sad death of her brother, Joseph Glentworth, while bathing in the Waiwakaiho River yesterday. The local freezing works have erected a separate department for the killing of pigs, and have installed the latest machinery whereby “the fellow that pays the rent” is shaved or dehaired in double quick time. Six men are operating, but the company save with the old man-handling method, the work is easier, to say nothing of the increase in the quantity that can be put through in a day by the same amount of labour. A good number of strangers have been camping on Waitara’s beach and have, been delighted with the ideal surroundings.
