DESTRUCTION BY FIRE
SETTLER’S NARROW ESCAPE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Masterton, Last Night. An eight-roomed homestead, owned and occupied by Mr. Percy Falconer, a settler of the Wangaehu Valley, was totally destroyed by fire in the early hours of Thursday. Falconer was the only occupant Mid had time only to make a hurried exit through his bedroom window. It is presumed that the fire started from embers in the kitchen range. The house and its contents were insured, but the amounts are unknown. BLAZE AT GREYMOUTH. Greymouth, Last Night. A new five-roomed house near the Omoto racecourse was destroyed by fire between 8 and 9 p.m., together with the furniture. The occupants, Mr. Cranna and his wife, have been absent since Christmas Eve. It is not known if their furniture or the house was insured. The owner of the house, Mr. Mackenzie, visited it to-day. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
