THE TEAM FOR ENGLAND. ELIGIBLES IN TARANAKI. A request for the nomination of players considered eligible for selection for the team to tour England has been made

to the. Taranaki Cricket Association in a letter from the New Zealand Council. A proviso is made that no one should be nominated who, if selected, cannot make the necessary arrangements to get away for .the tour. It is understood that two likely players who have been consulted have intimated their ability to get away, and there is a third player whose position in that respect is not yet definitely known. There is a probability that Mr. Dan Reese, the veteran Canterbury and New Zealand representative, who is chairman of the Cricket Council, will be present at next week’s Hawke Cup match in New Plymouth. AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. NORTHERNERS SEVEN fFOR 244. By Telegraph.—l’rcss Association. Wellington, Last Night. The cricket match between Auckland and Wellington to-day, although not quite up to the I’lunket Shield standard, produced some sparkling batting displays. Auckland won the toss and elected to hat, Bowley and Mills being the opening batsmen. McGirr and Massey were Wellington’s opening bowlers. Bowley had a life before reaching double . figures, but a few balls later- he lifted I Mitchell, who had replaced McGirr, and ' Boilings brought off a magnificent catch. —321 —13. Cooper was next and treated Mitchell with the utmost respect. Soon after the half-century was passed, Boilings took the ball from Massey. The desired effect took place, Boilings clean bowling Cooper. —67—2 -—2 l. Gillespie joined Mills, but without any improvement to the score McGirr skittled Mills’ stumps. —67 —3 —29. Player was next. Soon after the tea adjournment Gillespie got in front and was out l.b.w. —9B—4—lB. Dacre came to the wickets in the breeziest of moods, opening at a lively pace and collecting 11 off one over. Player also started to hit out, but Hollings beat him with a beauty —120—5 —15. Postles was next and opened with a single, but Dacre soon started to smack the bowling over the field. Massey relieved McGirr and Dacre put one into Collins’ hands.—l 37 —6 28. Smeeton filled the vacancy, but did not last long. Massey clean bowled him. —151—7—ll. Matheson was next and, with Postles, hit the bowling all over the field. Stumps were drawn with Postles 50 not out, Matheson 45 not out, and the score seven wickets for 244. TEMPTSNG OFFER TO PONSFOIRD, MOVEMENT FOR RETENTION. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Melbourne, Jan. 7. It is stated that Ponsford has been made a tempting offer to go to England to play cricket. The remuneration mentioned” is £l5OO a year. Compared with his present salary as a bank clerk this is munificent and not easy to resist. A movement is on foot, backed by an appeal in at least one paper, to the citizens of Victoria to do something to keep the young batting champion in Australia. It is suggested that the publie should subscribe sufficient to make it worth while for Ponsford to stay in Victoria. This proposal is said not to appeal to Ponsford, or to cricketers generally. Received Jan. 7, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 6.' The Ponsford imbroglio is agitating cricketing circles in England. Sir Lindsay Parkinson denies that Ponsford was offered a salary of £l5OO if he would play for the Blackpool Club in 1927, ami adds that he has not received a reply to the terms offered while Ponsford was in England, though he promised to consider the matter and eable his reply. The Evening Standard, discussing the squabble whether England or Australia shall have Ponsford, describes it as undignified, though the suggestion that his admirers should . subscribe a pound per run is amusing and ’’probably only refers to the past, otherwise Ponsford may stay at the wickets a couple of days while he amasses the price of a new motor-ear.” The latest development is that Parkin has become the manager of the Grosvenor Hotel at Blackpool, and intends to play for Blackpool. Parkin says he was offered £3O per week by League clubs to play on Saturday afternoons, and some also offered £5OO if he would sign articles, but he intended to play for Blackpool as an amateur. The Yorkshire County cricket committee ’ headed a testimonial fund to Wilfrid Rhodes witl> £250, expressing the opinion that some fresh, substantial tribute should be paid to the man whose super bowling finally tinned the game in favour of England in the last test.
