CABLE COMMUNICATION
CLOSER EMPIRE UNION THE PACIFIC DUPLICATION. GREAT ADVANCE CELEBRATED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In connection with the celebration of the duplication of the Pacific Cable, the following cablegram has been received from Lord Burnham by the manager of the United Press Association of New Zealand:— ' “As president of the Empire Press Union, I send the greetings and congratulations of the executive upon the inauguration of trans-Pacific communication by the new cable of the Pacific Cable Board. The occasion marks a great advance in the history of Empire consolidation, and this organisation oi newspaper proprietors throughout the Empire regards the new channel as :» means to closer union of thought and policy, believing that a further flow oi Press messages will follow upon a reduction of the Press rates enabled by the increased capacity.” The following message has been sent in reply:—“Thanks for your felicitous message. The Press of New Zealand reciprocate the kindly sentiments of the Empire Press Union, and are, in common with that body, looking forward to great Imperial journalistic and commercial advantages from the duplication of the Pacific cable.”
