The bagpipes, in the opinion of the usual run of people, are typically Scottish, but while it is true that the Highlanders evolved and have retained through many adversities a type of pipe that ie peculiar in some respects, the bagpipes are the common heritage of nearly all the peoples of modern Europe. Where the pipe originated there is no evidence to show, but excavations at Susa, Persia, have unearthed figures of men playing bagpipes, with a bag under the arm and a ehan ter, and the dates of the works are given as the Bth century, 8.c., so that 3000 years ago the bagpipe was well on its way to the type of instrument we know.
