SWIMMING.

TARANAKI CENTRE MEETS. VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED. A meeting of the Taranaki Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held at New Plymouth last evening. Present: Mr. W. H. Moyes (chairman), Miss Saxton, Messrs. Pope, F. J. Eggleton, G. F. Bertrand, A. J. Blennerhassett, P. Flannagan, R. G. Howell and L. Frethey. A letter was received from the council of the New Zealand Association stating that with a view to assisting the work of the educational officers the council had decided to invite expressions of opinion as to how monetary grants for the use of educational officers could best be utilised. The maximum amount available in the case of each educational officer would be £2o.—The meeting resolved that the schools in Taranaki be graded into four grades and that a trophy to the value of £5 be given to the school in each grade showing the best result in the competitions for swimming certificates. It was decided to circularise thw schools, acquainting them with this scheme. The New Plymouth Ladies’ Life-Sav-ing Club wrote requesting the Taranaki, Centre to alter the distance for the inter-' mediate girls’ championship from 50 to 100 yards, so that it may correspond with the distance required for the New Zealand championship, and that a 200 yards ladies’ open ehampionship be included in the Taranaki championship. — A recommendation was made to the programme committee to inelude sueh races in the next championship programme. The New Zealand Association wrote stating that the annual conference of centres would be held in Auckland on Tuesday, January 25, and asking that arrangements be made with reference to the attendance of delegates and the forwarding of remits.—The meeting decided to notify all clubs requesting them to send in names of delegates likely to attend and to forward remits for submission to the conference. It was resolved to hold the Taranaki championship meeting on Saturday, January 8, and Messrs. Howell and Blennerhassett were appointed a sub-commit-tee to draw up a programme t oplace before a committee meeting to be held on Tuesday next. The meeting discussed the question of building new tepid baths and decided to Write to Auckland and Christchurch with reference to the cost of upkeep, revenue obtained and any such relevant Information.
