KAPONGA NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Kaponga, Dec. 13. A well-known motor-cyclist from this town had a very narrow escape from a somewhat serious accident on his way home from Hawera last Thursday evening. He was proceeding along, the Main South Road on his motor-cycle when some two miles from Hawera he noticed a car coming in the opposite direction, and appearing to be on the wrong side of the road. When about fifty yards off him the car pulled to its correct side of the road. A very few seconds had passed and he again began wandering all over the road. As it happened the rider of the motorcycle was proceeding along very cautious--ly, and, being unable to make out what was the matter, he was in the act of speeding up his bike to pass him, when the oncoming motorist swerved right straight across the road, and slap bang he went into the cyclist. The force of the impact was sufficient to overthrow the car, which turned out to be a Chev. racing model, containing three passengers, on to the roadside, where it remained till next day. In proportion to the ear, the cyclist received only minor damage—a pair of broken forks and the electric light plant affected. The motor-cyclist said he could not understand how he got off so well, a* there was not a mark on his overalls or clothing in the shape of torn garments, and the only effects is a great deal of stiffness. A rather unenviable experience befell an employee of Mr. McPhiffips, who has a farm on the Lower Manaia Road, last Sunday morning. He was proceeding to the factory here, and was about to prepare to go under the alley way to the receiving stage to unload his milk when the horse he was driving fell down on its side, gave one kick each with its front and hind legs, and emitted two unmerciful squeals, and lay still. A few other suppliers at the factory soon arrived, and lent a willing hand in freeing the animal of the harness, etc., in order to clear a way for the other remaining suppliers to take in their milk. The cause of the death of the horse was believed to be heart failure. Mr. Reesby has been appointed to-take charge of Mr. F. E. Williams’ digester and manure works, in place of Mr. A. V. Briscoe, who has removed to New Plymouth. Afr. J. Eddy, of the Kaponga Post Office staff, sustained a broken bone of the ankle joint on Sunday last, necessitating his removal to the Hawera Public Hospital for treatment, where at a late hour last evening he was reported to be doing as well as could be expected. The usual fortnightly meeting of Loyal Kaponga M.U.1.0.0.F. was held this evening, N.G. Bro. R. B. Jones presiding over an attendance of 36 members. Six new members were proposed. The resignation of Bro. R. B. Jones as N.G. of the lodge was accepted with regret. On a ballot, Bro. E. B. Candy was elected. L.M. Bro. W. Marr installed Bro. Candy in his new position.
