DISTRICT NEWS.
PURANGI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Evidence of the continued fine weather’s effect on the roads was shown last week-end by the motor traffic which passed through Purangi. The MatauSaddle is usually accessible to motors all the year round, with the aid of chains. It is the flat mud roads in the Matau Valley which cut up so badly in winter. However, at this time of the year one can thoroughly enjoy a motor ride through these districts, the clay roads being beautifully smooth and easy to ride on. Settlers are complaining of the exceptionally bad season for poultry-raising, several residents only managing to get one chicken per setting of eggs. Imagine the joy then, of one budding poultry farmer who, after several very unsuccessful attempts, got 12 fine healthy chicks from a sitting of 12 eggs. Mrs. W. Anderson left for Wanganui on Thursday morning. We are sorry to hear her mother is very ill again, and extend our best wishes for a speedy and safe recovery. Mrs. A. J. Webb left on Thursday morning for Stratford, Hawera and Midhirst. Mr. and Mrs. Crowhuret arrived on Tuesday night to take up their residence in this district. On Friday, December 10, the annual school concert and prize-giving took place in the local school. The programme was provided mostly by the children, and the manner in which the items were given and received showed the careful training of their teacher, Miss W 7 ebb. The programme was as follows:—Duet, J. Mounsey and 8. Mounsey; song, '‘Old Folks at Home,” the children; recitations, Illa Kilminster; song, “There Was a Chinaman,” the pupils; dialogue, W. Watson and C. Drake; garland drill, the girls; song, the pupils; piano solo, Mrs. J. S. Fletcher; recitation, F. and D. Bertrand; Maori song and action, the pupils; song, Mr. Mounsey; song, Una Webb; dialogue, “The Sewing Meeting,” the girls; recitation, Cyril MeLean; band selection, the children. After the concert the chairman thanked Miss Webb and all w-ho had helped to make the concert a success. The floor was then cleared for dancing, the music being provided by Mrs. J. G. Fletcher and Rex Larsen. Extras were played by Misses Webb and Larsen.
