CHRISTMAS CHEER

BRIGHTENING DULL LIVES. With the object of assisting local charitable bodies in providing Christmas cheer for those who would otherwise have nothing to brighten their lives during the season of festivities, a meeting of commercial travellers, warehousemen and others interested was held in New Plymouth last night. With the proffered assistance of the New Plymouth Savage Club it was decided to make the effort next Monday, in the form of a beauty contest and sale of shilling packages in the afternoon, and a Savage Club korero at the Opera House at night. Mr. G. Sykes was voted to the ehnir. A deputation consisting of Messrs. C. H. Wyatt and C. Lawrcy was received from the Savage Club offering the assistance of the club in any effort. Mr. Wyatt thought it would be a good thing for tliem to combine and the idea was for the Savage Club to hold a korero in the evening and for the others to hold a beauty contest in the afternoon. The idea was favourably received, and Messis. Conway, Holder, Brooker and List were appointed an entertainment committee. It was left in the hands of Messis. Andrews and Morris “to arrange for the attendance in New Plymouth next Monday of the four recent beauty contest winners.” It was decided that contributions should be left'at the offices of Hooker Bros., Egmont Street. The allocation of the money collected was held over until a meeting to be held next Friday night. The question of holding an annual reunion and entertainment and of ultimately forming a local association was also’held over until Friday’s meeting
