BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS. CALF-REARING COMPETITIONS. THE GROUP JUDGING. The group judging in the calf-rearing competitions of the Boys' and Girls’ Clubs for the Te Kiri, Kaponga, Toko and Stratford areas was completed yesterday in fine weather. Mr. Rod Syme, schools’ agriculture instructor, organised the judging, assisted in the Central Division area by Mr. Dil Mackay. Mr. A. T. Wills, of Hawera, acted as judge for the Stratford and Toko groups, while Mr. J. Pettigrew, of Pihama, judged the Te Kiri and Kaponga groups. In commenting on the interest displayed in the competitions, Mr. Syme mentioned that, whereas only 155 calves were judged last year, the number paraded this season reached 242, while the class of calf produced for the group judging was of a very high standard indeed, and showed a distinct improvement on last year's prize-winners. The championship will be decided at Eltham on Tuesday, December 14, when the first, second and third placed calves in both classes of each group will assemble for final decision. At the championship judging a gold medal, donated by Mr. TV. McL’Dowie, of Matapu, will also be awarded for the calf deemed to be the best dairy animal and judged on dairy points. The championship honours will carry with them trophies donated by the Taranaki Farmers’ Union, to the extent of £5, £3 and £2 respectively, in both the Jersey-Ayrshire and Short-horn-Friesian classes. At the Toko School, fifteen handsome calves, consisting of the winners of the judging at the Stanley, Toko, Douglas and Huiroa Schools (group 8), were assembled, and Mr. Wills had some difficulty in selecting the Winners. He judged impartially on condition, the points for the children’s chart work having already been allotted at the Individual schools. This system of judging prevailed throughout the tour. The results were as follow: JERSEY-AYRSHIRE CLASS.

Afterwards, Mr. J. Brown, of Douglas, donated trophies for the two best judges among the children, the calves to be judged on type and condition. Mr. Wills selected the calf he believed best and the children were left to the competition later in the day.
