BITTER EJECTION FIGHT

CAMPAIGN IN THE STATES MUDSLINGING AND ABUSE PERSONAL ISSUES RAISED By Telegraph—Pres* Am*.— Copyright. Washington, Oct. 31. As is usual in American political campaigns when th® election draws near, elose personal abuse and mudslinging become rife. The present contest is no exception, even the name of the President is being bandied about, and candidates for office are referring to each other by vicious names, while insinuations are passing concerning their private lives. Aspirants for office report that President Coolidge does not favour the Republican Senatorial candidate for Illinois, because the latter is alleged to have received large campaign funds from interested public utilities corporations. This led the candidate to reply, despite •President Coolidge’s denials, that the President’s campaign of 1924 was also financed by steel, wool, sugar and other large corporate interests. The New York State campaign degenerated into an ugly spectacle. Messrs Smith and Mills, his opponent for the Governorship, both usually able and dignified men, making charges and countercharges and references to each other’s private lives, until Mr. Mills apologised and public’ affairs were again made the issue. Personalities in politics dominate' all the interests throughout the country, and the bitterness of the fight between the two parties is likely to continue to the last minute.
