MANFRED SCRATCHED FOR CUP. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov, 1, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Nov. I. At Flemington, to-day Valicare did a record half-mile gallop in 48jsec. Limericke cantered twice round, and pulled up apparently well. At Caulfield Becdos did the best mile in Imin 47sec, Miss Disraeli taking Imin 47|sec. . ‘ Manfred was scratched, for the Melbourne Cup at 10.30 this morning. HEROIC AIHO SCRATCHED. Melbourne, Nov. 1. Heroic was scratched for the Melbourne Cup at 3 30 p.m. To-day’s scratchings of both Manfred and Heroic have created a sensation In Turf circles. Jeg filled after Saturday and an examination of Heroic to-day proved conclusively that he will be uuabie to run. J. Courts rides Limerick. THE VICTORIAN DERBY. COMMENTS ON THE RUNNING. Sydney, Nov. 1. Commenting on the Victorian Derby, the Herald says: “With the possible exception of Limerick, whose preparation was materially affected as the result of an injured heel, no fault could be found with the condition of the candidates. The New Zealand gelding stepped a little timidly at first. Ranipion, who had the inside running, was one of the smartest away, and he was always in front, although many were not impressed by his performance for the reason that Thracian had made him stretch out in the run home and was only beaten by three-quarters of a length. It must be remembered that Rampion made all the running and that the time "was good under existing conditions, being only a second outside Manfred’s record for the race. “The surprise of the race was the fine display of Thracian, who was never further back than third. Coming into the straight Limerick made a smart move in so dazzling a way that it looked as if he would come on and win. The effort, however, ceased almost as sensationally as it began, and he lost ground in the run to the post.” The Telegraph says: “Rampion made all the running to the turn, but had to be ridden right out to stall off Thracian. Limerick’s form was so ordinary that his Melbourne Cup prospects, are far from bright. There was very little dash in his finishing run.” The Herald says: “The Cantala Stakes provided one of the most exciting finishes seen for some time, and gave Melbourne racegoers an opportunity of witnessing the brilliancy of Amounis, who put up a great performance.” MELBOURNE CUP DAY. GREAT RACE ANTICIPATED. (Notes by “Moturoa.”) The greatest handicap rack in Australasia—in fact, probably the bestendowed race of its kind in the world — the Melbourne Cup, comes up for decision at Flemington to-day. This oldestablished race dates from 1881, and has always been run over two miles. Offering a splendid stake—a fortune in itself —as well as practically unlimited opportunity of wagering, it is little wonder that horse owners in' all parts of Australasia have done their utmost to breed or import a horse equal to the task of pulling off the Cup, and this year again it can be said that the best bred stayers in the five States of the Commonwealth, as well as those hailing from New Zealand, are engaged. When the last mail arrived from Sydney Manfred, Limerick and Rampion were almost equal favourites there, though in Melbourne Manfred had a slight call over the crack three-year-olds. (Manfred has since been scratched.) The Banker and Pantheon were equally favoured next, and then followed Naos, Royal Charter, Spearfelt, Heroic, Cromwell, Beedos and Spearer. Saturday’s results at Flemington served to consolidate Manfred’s position in public favour, though Rampion, Limerick, Pantheon and The Banker also ran good races. In the Melbourne Stakes Manfred (9.0) won without, being extended. from Pantheon (9.4) and The Banker (9.1). In the Cup the weights are: Manfred 10.1, Pantheon 9.3, The Banker 8.12. Dn the other hand, Rampion and Limerick carried Derby weights, 8.10, and in the Cup they get, off with: Rampion 7.9. Limerick 7.5. Whether the three-year-olds will prove equal to running the best of the topweights off their feet remains to be seen, but in recent years some big weights have been carried to victory. Poitrel (1920) winning with 10.0 and Windbag (19251 with 9.2 Rampion, the dual Derby winner, is a fine colt, and Pantheon is a stayer of the first water. The Banker won the New Zealand Cup with 8.4. running the two miles in 3min 25see, but the time does not compare favourably with Windbag’s "min 22Jsec recorded in the Melbourne Cup last year. (Following are the acceptors, and their weights in to-dav’s race;— MELBOURNE CUP. of 10,000 sovs. Two miles. —-Heroic 9.10, Pantheon 9.3, Spearfelt 0.3. The Banker 8.12, Tookarby 8.10, Spearer 8.8, Royal Charter 8.5, Piastoon 8.4, Valamita 8.0, Johnnie Jones 8.0. Valbec 7.11. Comus 7.11, Rampion 7.0. Balbus 7.8, The Slave 7.7, Our Prince 7.0, Limerick 7.5. Vala’sian 7.4, Naos 7.0. Stralia 6.12, Beedos 6.7, Miss Disraeli 6.7. Poseidon (1008) Is the only “double” Cun winner, viz... winner of the Caiil-Of'.-I and Melbourne Cups. Poseidon was,

a wonderful distance horse, for he won ths Caulfield Cup again in 1907 with 9.3, though 10.3 saw him only eighth in the Melbourne Cup which followed. Of Victorian Derby and Melbourne Cup double winners there have been ten, but since Poseidon achieved the feat in IDO6, only two, Prince Foote in 1909, and Patrohus in 1915, have succeeded In pulling it off, Last year Manfred won the Derby, but had to be content with second place (to Windbag) in the Cup. Three well backed horses in to-day’s Cup will carry over weight-for-age. Heroic (albs over), Rampion (31bs over), and Limerick (21bs over). The veteran jockey, R. Lewis, who will be 48 years of age this month, and who steered Manfred to victory in the recent Caulfield Cup, has ridden in 29 Melbourne Cups, of which he has won three, scoring on The Victory (1902), Patrobus (1915), and Artilleryman (1919). In addition he was second on Maltster (1900), Alawa (1909), Shepherd King (1916) and Stand By (1924). Messrs J. E. and C. IL Brien won £14,000 In stakes last season, and with Rampion and Pantheon in winning vein again this season —their combined winnings this year being nearly £20,000 — they are likely to show a much greater tally this time. With such a great pair to represent the stable in the Melbourne Cup, they will be very unlucky if some of the stake money does not come to their banking account. Some idea of the betting which takes place on the Cup may be gained from Melbourne papers, which report that the Ring now stood to lose £lOO,OOO straight out and in doubles, if Manfred, The Banker or Rampion won the Cup. Recent wagers in single items included the odds to £BOOO abont The Banker, and £6OOO about Manfred, while another backer supported Pantheon to win him £4OOO. Mfteceived Nov. I, 8.45 p.m. Sydney, Nov. I. The withdrawal of Manfred, who was the outstanding public fancy for the Melbourne Cup, came as a sensational surprise. The scratching has hit the public heavily.
