OBITUARY.

MRS. HENRY BROWN. The ranks of Taranaki’s early pioneers have been further depleted by the death at Inglewood yesterday morning of Mrs. Henry Brown at the age of 80 years. She had been failing in health for some time, so that her decease was not quite unexpected, but her passing will be none the lees regretted in a community in which ehe was highly respected. Mrs. Brown was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Brooking, it New Plymouth, and was born in New Plymouth in 1846, only five years after the founding of the province. Thus she was intimately acquainted with all the vicissitudes of the struggling settlement in its earliest years, and soon became imbued with the same sterling spirit and devotion to the new land that animated and characterised, the early settlers. Between 50 and 60 years ago she married Mr. Henry Brown, son of the late Rev. Handley Brown, and went to live with him at “Welbourle,” their farm on the Upper Carrington Road, in the days when most of the land in that vicinity was virgin bush. It was there that Mr. Brown operated his first sawmill. About 40 years ago she moved to a residence on the Junction Road near the centre of Inglewood, and has resided there ever since. To the residents of both town and country ehe has been a familiar personality, entering whole-heartedly, during her early years in the township, into the activities of the district. For the advancement of the Anglican Church especially she was an indefatigable worker, and her passing will be deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends.

The late Mrs. Brown is survived by one son and one daughter, Mr. Frank Brown (Inglewood) and Miss Ethel Brown (Inglewood), and one sister, Mrs, George, New Plymouth.
