MOTOR-CAR & TRAM COLLIDE.

WOMAN IN HOSPITAL, MINOR INJURIES TO OTHERS. A collision between a motor-car and a tramcar at the intersection of Liardet and Courtenay Streets about 10.45 a.m. yesterday resulted in Mrs. E. G. J. Elwin, of Puniho, being taken to the Public Hospital suffering from the effects of a blow on the side of the head and cuts on one leg. Her condition is not serious, it was reported last night. Abrasions on the face and a scalp wound were received by a son of Mrs. Elwin’s, aged ten, and a younger boy received minor injuries.

The tramcar was derailed, but its three occupants and the motorman were unscathed. The motor-car was considerably damaged. The driver, Mr. Elwin, was not injured. Mr. Elwin was driving along Courtenay Street towards Fitzroy when the accident occurred. He had accelerated to climb the hill and, he said, he did not see or hear the tram coming from Pukekura Park until he struck it.

The motor-car was hit broadside on and Mr. Elwin was thrown out, but landed on his feet. His wife, who had been in the front seat, was lying on the ground unconscious with her legs partly under the ear. She was taken to the Fire Brigade Station and after medical attention was removed to the hospital. On realising that a collision was inevitable, Mrs. Elwin opened the door of the motor-car and got out. She was on the side away from the tram, but was knocked down when the impact occurred.

Glass from several shattered windows in the tram narrowly missed Mr. T. Horton, superintendent of Pukekura Park, who was one of the passengers. He raised his arm to protect his face and though his sleeve was torn by flying glass he escaped injury. The other passengers, two ladies, were sitting at the back of the car and were uninjured.
