BUTTER AND CHEESE UP.

RISE IN LONDON MARKET SEVERAL SHILLINGS DIFFERENCE. INCREASE MAY BE TEMPORARY. A rise of several shillings in the price of both butter and cheese is recorded in this week’s London market quotations. Arrivals during early June were light, however, and it is open to question whether the increase will be sustained.

Private advice received in New Plymouth yesterday gave the following quotations for the week ending June 10: New Zealand butter: Salted, 178 s; unsaltde, 180 s. Market firm.

New Zealand cheese: While and coloursalted, 180 s. Market firm. Arrivals during the week were the Waimana, Port Victor and Tasmania. Las) week’s quotations were:—. Butter.—Market steady. New Zealand salted, 1725; unsalted, 1765. Cheese.—Market steady. New Zealand white, 935, coloured, 925. The arrivals during the early weeks of June had been fairly light, as far as butter was concerned, said a local dairy produce expert when discussing the position with a Daily News reporter. Holders of stored butter, if they tried to release their stocks, might check the advance in price. There was a lot of butter to reach London yet, and as the season at Home appeared to have been a good one, it was problematical whether the rise could be sustained. In these days of artificial restrictions, it was difficult to determine whether this week’s increase was due to general causes or to artificial marketing.

With regard to cheese, the statistical position had been very sound, but unfortunately the industrial position; together with irregular arrivals from New Zealand, had brought about a lower range of prices than was warranted. Experienced London opinion advised that but for these factors the average price of New Zealand cheese should not have been below 100 s. As it was, the average for the season had been about 935.
