A Sydney player in a “house” match has secured the unusual distinction of taking four wickets with four successive balls. In first-class cricket, two men in New Zealand have accomplished the feat, both doing this in England. IF. J. Shacklock, the Canterbury Association’s coach, did the trick in 1891, when bowling for Notts against Somerset, and S. G. Smith, of Auckland, did likewise in 1914, in a match between Northamptonshire and Derbyshire, But a feat without parallel in important cricket was that of A. E. Trott, who, in 1997, in his own benefit match between Middlesex and Somerset, not only took four wickets with four successive balls, but accomplished the “hat trick” later in the same innings.
