TURF TOPICS.

(By “Moturoa.”) Napier Park on Friday next. * * * t» Roy Reed’s score this season is 70} wins. ♦ » # # Rowley let his party down three times at Ellerslie. * * * » 'Frisco Mail cleaned up three hurdle races at the Dunedin meeting. • * « # Koauau and Supporter will represent Mr. J. B. Gaisford at Napier. Both horses are well. « * * « Diamond Ring was produced at Otaki, but ran badly. She may be capable of improvement, however. • « * « Congratulations to Mr. W. p. Russell on his appointment as judge to the Wellington Racing Club. “The right man in the right place.” * # * # The judging at Otaki left a lot to l.e. desired, and owners of horses which won by narrow margins were in a lather until the native gentleman hoisted the numbers. #**•«. C. Wright has about a dozen horses in work at Gisborne, and. expects to spring a few surprises in jumping events this season. He is taking Highway, Mangatoetoe and Cohesion to Napier.' * # Charlie Emerson’s army of followers had a bad run at Dunedin, the popular horseman going through the three days’ racing without scoring a single win. Roy Reed rode four winners at Auckland, and new looks like beating his - southern rival for the riding premiership this season. * * * * R. J. Mason’s yearlings taken to Sydney recently are the colt by Limond from Waterwhigs, and the filly by Absurd from Eulogy. When Mason last visited Australia with yearlings he won two valuable prizes in the early spring, taking the Breeders’ Plate with Nincompoop, and the Gimcrack Stakes with Chignon. \ # * * * Kawini must be about the most unfortunate jumper in commission at present. Prior to the Great Northern meeting it was mentioned in these columns that .the Formative gelding’s form was highly assessed by his owner, Mr. H. A. Swaffield, and the gelding certainly ran two fine races, filling the role of run-ner-up on each occasion. This makes four seconds on end in important events. * * * * A short while back the capable Palmerston apprentice, Tommy Green, could do. nothing wrong, but his luck has changed, and at Otaki, after being up on one second (Mountain Star) on the first day, registered four consecutive thirds on Saturday, his mounts being Royal Laud, Olympic, Mountain Jjjan and Mireusonta. Green will probably de the lightweight riding in Sydney for F. D. Jones in the coming spring.

The Hawk has again joined the active brigade at Hastings, and provided he stands up to his work, will race in Australia next season. The Hawk is now’ in his seventh year, and it is doubtful if lie will ever regain his form of younger days.

Shining Armour appears to be getting more solid, and ran two fine races at Otaki. Fred Tilley, thought he had a New Zealand Cup winner in the Greyspear gelding, and being only four years’ old at present, there is a chance that the wish may be fulfilled later on.

A Palmerston scribe reports that Comedy Prince is again striding out freely, and will probably race at Napier next week. F. Towler, who has been so successful on the Comedy King gelding, hopes to be sufficiently recovered from liis Wanganui accident to do the riding.

Last year Eerie won the Napier Steeplechase, being followed home by Sanforte and Fireblight. Both the Taranaki representatives will be missing next week, but Fireblight, who has been working well, will be a .runner. * * * »

The Ahuriri Hurdle Race attracted a poor field last time, Askari winning by a head from Goldpiece, with Birka third., and Santiago and Suspicion also started. This year Ngata, San Fera, Koauau, Comedy Prince, Santiago and other useful horses are engaged, and the prospects of a good race are very bright.

Mr. Jack Gaisford has Supporter looking very well at present. The Patronus —Sylvan Song gelding has been hunted regularly with the Rangitikei Hunt, and his jumping has been good on all but one occasion, when, in “chancing” a gorse fence, he struck wire, and came a cropper. This is a mishap which might Happen to the best of jumpers. * * * « Several New Zealand-bred horses were weighted for the Victorian Grand Nationals, but on present appearances none of them are likely to start. In the Hurdles Sir Roseberry was given 11.0, Cherry Ripe 10.5, and Llewellyn 9.9, while in the Steeples Sir Roseberry has 11.9, Chrysostom 11.9, and Llewellyn 10.4. In the Australian Hurdles Sir Roseberry was weighted at 11.3, and Cherry Ripe 10.10. The Absurd gelding Bathos, who is a new chum over fences, has 9.4. Sir Roseberry was given 11.8 in the Australian Steeples. # Trainer George Price expected to leave Sydney yesterday by the Ulimaroa on his usual flying visit to his home land, New Zealand. George is a busy man nowadays, but finds time each winter to spend a week or two amongst friends in New Zealand. # # # # Thursby, who scored a second and a win at the Auckland meeting, is a useful three-year-old gelding by Thurnham—Hessian. Considering his previous good form at the meeting, he was allowed to pay a false price when he romped home’in the concluding event on Monday. JOCKEY'S APPEAL DISMISSED. Br Telegraph—Press As.n—Copyright. Sydney, June 11. The appeal of G. Young, an ex-New Zealand jockey, against the decision of the Rosehill Racing' Club’s stipendiary stewards in suspending him for three months, was discussed and the suspension sustained by the Australian Jockey Club.
