LYTTELTON WHARF TROUBLE

SERIOUS LOSS CAUSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association Christchurch, May 5. The watersiders failed to respond to calls for labour for the Katoa and Gale yesterday. The men gave no reason for their unexpected refusal, but it is rumoured that they wanted their pay to commence from 1 p.m. and not from the time their ships were due to be worked. The calls for labour were responded to this morning. At the Harbour Board meeting this morning, Dr. Thacker said that the work of the port was hampered by a continuous series of pin-pricks, and the board’s revenue had gone down £2OOO as a result. There must be a solution. Certain shipowners were giving preference to certain men. Captain Monro denied this. The secretary said that if both sides would abide by the law the difficulties would not arise. Dr. Thacker’s motion that the secretary should report on the position was .held over until after the Wellington Conference.
