PROGRESS OF TOKAORA, ERECTION OF NEW HALL. (From Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, May 5. About sixteen settlers of Tokaora and district met in the old hall to-night for the purpose of considering the proposal to erect a new hall at Tokaora. Mr W. Standish presided. After considerable discussion, on the motion of Mr, P. Banks, a committee consisting of seven members, with power to add, was formed, to go into the question and prepare an estimate oi the proposed work. The committee appointed was as follows: Messrs. t>. Thrush, E. Tippett, P. Banks, W. Sehmidt, W. Standish, A. Freyne, and T. Holland.

Mr. G. T. Francis explained that in 1921-2 an unsuccessful effort was made build a hall at Tokaora, and about £7O was raised and left in the hands of Mrs. Francis. This fund, with interest to date, now amounted to about £BO. The purpose of the meeting was to decide what steps were to be taken in regard to the proposal that a new hall should be erected. Mr. Francis mentioned that he preferred the money to be placed to a trust account. On the motion of Mr. P. Mace, Mr. Francis was elected secretary pro tern. Mr. Tippett asked how the money had been raised, and suggested that the original donors might yet have a call on the fund.

The chairman explained that there were no minutes of the previous meetings, and he was sure, that the whole trouble had previously arisen over the sale of'the hall. Mr. Francis pointed out that previously a social committee had been formed to raise money by holding social evenings. The chairman said that, judging by the attendance at socials, a hall was an absolute necessity. Mr. Banks advised that several settlers had offered to eart material ami gravel free, and on his motion the resolution as stated was passed. Messrs. Banks, Freyne and Schmidt were appointed to canvass the district and ascertain the feelings of the settlers on the subject.

As trustees for the fund on hand and for money subsequently collected. Messrs. Tippett, Banks and .Standish were appointed. Mr. Tippett raised the question of a suitable site for the hall, but the chairman pointed out that this could be left to the hall committee. On the motion of Mr. Banks, it was decided to ask the canvassing committee to interview the farmers of the district with a view to selecting a suitable site and ascertaining the cost of a section. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Francis for taking charge of the funds.

MOKOTA SPORTS. With the approach of the Mokoia and district sports meeting on May 19, the committees are energetically making preparations to ensure the complete success of the gathering. There are record entries in the jumping competitions, and very good entries have been received for the seven-a-side Rugby football tournament. The grounds are in good order, and working bees are continually completing improvements.

GENERAL ITEMS. Several prize-winning chrysanthemum blooms exhibited at the recent St. Andrew’s flower show by Mr. R. Douglas, of Hawera, are at present on show in a local shop window.
